  • My Journey

I have always had a keen interest in photography and greatly enjoy the satisfaction of capturing the moment. I have never been a fan of the traditional approach, with overly posed photographs and whilst I structure my shoots around ideas we have discussed, I feel that by taking the time to interact with the families, I am able to capture more natural moments. Having trained and worked as an NNEB Nursery Nurse, and having three children of my own, I am very comfortable around children and understand that it takes time for them to be at ease with the camera and not every child is ready at the same time! I find a relaxed atmosphere makes for happy children and parents!

I strongly feel that you never stop learning when taking pictures, not only because the equipment is developing at such a rate but also because no two situations are the same. To that end, I have always set aside time for my personal development through courses, mentors and accreditations. In 2008 I was awarded Associate of the Photographic Society of Singapore for my work with black & white portraits and my study of dramatic lighting. I am also a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals and The Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers.

I trained as a photographer with some truly talented mentors in Singapore and the USA. A photographer’s style is their own; natural settings, subjects and B&W characterize some of my own favorite work, but I offer my thanks to these photographer greats who have helped me develop my style. In Singapore, Tom Ang and Lem Cheng Hai, in America, Keith Carter and very special thanks to the award winning Pamela Einarsen with whom I was fortunate enough to work with in Connecticut.

Using the latest equipment may not satisfy the aesthete, but truly stunning images result and I am constantly searching and experimenting with the new ideas and possibilities that modern technology affords the photographer. I have an obsessive attention to detail and use only the best materials, printing and presentations.

It is not every day that you trust someone with portraits for you or your loved ones and I take that trust very seriously. My shoots are arranged to meet your needs and I very much look forward to meeting you and setting up your personal shoot. Take a look at my porfolio and hopefully you’ll find the inspiration to capture that timeless essence of yourself, your family or your friends.

I currently live in Braintree in Essex with my husband and three boys.

Sally Slack Photography Referral Scheme {Children and Newborn Photographer Braintree, Essex}

I love my clients! I am getting ready to start my 5th year in business; I couldn’t have done it without a loyal client-base. During my time working in Singapore, I had numerous repeat clients, these amazing clients in turn recommended me to their friends and family. Now I find myself having to start all over again… I do love a challenge!:-)So with that in mind I have decided to start a referral program, and who doesn’t love a freebie!

And because I have such fantastic clients, I am going offer one of the best referral programs around!

Referrals are the best compliment one could give! Each time someone you have referred books a shoot you’ll receive a £25 print credit towards your next order. Just get your friends to mention your name when booking and we will take care of the rest. When you refer 4 people, you’ll receive a £100 print credit! I do not have a limit, so feel free to take advantage of this as often as you like!

Thank you for your continued support and loyalty!

March Newborns {Newborn Photographer Essex}

March was such a lovely month filled with lots of gorgeous little newborns and lots of lovely Mummy and Daddy’s, I had two maternity sessions cancelled because the Mums to be went into labour, one of them six weeks early!

Thankfully everyone arrived safe and sound. Plus I got to spend two weeks of March in Singapore, working and catching up with friends, I’ll do another post with images from Singapore, later on in the month.

So without any delay I would like to introduce: Connie, Mae, Lucas, Molly, Finnley and Freya.

Just one word of warning this post is likely to make you seriously broody!

Olivia {Newborn Photography Essex}

A couple of weeks ago I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Olivia, she was 7 days old. Her Mum and Dad John and Vicki brought her to my studio and we spent a very relaxed morning capturing some gorgeous images. Here are a few of my favorites.

If you are thinking of getting images of your newborn please contact me before your little one arrives.

Sessions can be organized at last minute but are subject to availability.

The only way to ensure your newborn session is to book in advance.:-)

Please ask about the newborn special offers I have running at the moment.

Why do Professional Photographers charge so much?

Why are my prints so expensive? Why don’t I just burn all your photos onto a disk and sell them like that?

These are all questions that I get asked and I thought I would take the time to answer them all in a blog post.

From my perspective I am a professional photographer and I aim to deliver high quality fine art photography that differentiates me from the “shoot and burn” photographers that just give you a disk of all your images that you’ll probably never do anything with and my not even like all of them. I want you to come away from your shoot with timeless works of art that you will cherish for years to come. I don’t rush my shoots, they take time, all children are different and we need to go at their own pace. For example If you book a newborn shoot with me I book out the whole day in my diary. I don’t squeeze them in at hourly intervals. My aim is to create a luxury custom photography experience and if that’s not what you want then that’s OK but I am probably not the right photographer for you.

We’re in the digital age and everyone has access to camera’s, scanners, photo printers etc. How is it that Snappy Snaps can charge x amount for a print and you charge ten times that? The simple answer is that my clients are not paying for the actual print they are paying for my time and expertise.

I didn’t become a professional photographer overnight. I became a professional photographer through years of experience and although a Professional Digital SLR can now be purchased for under £4,000, professional portraits involve much more than a camera.

I run a business and I need to make a profit, making a profit enables me to continue to invest in professional equipment such as camera’s, lens’, lighting, backdrops, software, computers, backup devices. This equipment is constantly changing and evolving, the life span of a professional digital camera is probably 3 years at most. Training is also a large investment that I make; this goes towards making sure I can deliver to my clients the images that I know they will treasure for many years.

When I am not working on a shoot I can spend much of my time doing the following:

  • Marketing
  • Answering emails and phone calls
  • Meeting with clients
  • Setting up the studio or driving to a location
  • Downloading and backing up the images.
  • Processing images
  • Helping clients make their choices.
  • Printing the image
  • Framing
  • Packaging.
  • Maintaining and up to date website and social media.

As you can see it all adds up to many hours of work and it would be impossible to stay in business if I were only making a few pence per client.

I would advise anyone who is thinking of hiring a professional photographer to take time and do their research. For instance if you book a Newborn shoot your little newborn is not going to be little for long; it’s time you don’t get back. If you book a session and you don’t like the images chances are there won’t be time to redo the shoot. I’m not saying pick me I’m saying choose your photographer carefully. Here are a few things to look for:

  • Check out their experience level – Has this person photographed other newborns/children? Does he/she do this for a living or for fun?
  • Photographic Style – Are the images that you have seen, what you would like for yourselves?
  • Personality – Is the photographer someone you can get along with? Is the “chemistry” there?
  • Price Range – The last thing you should do is shop by price, but that’s not practical. How much do you want to spent, if one photographer is more expensive than the other are they worth the price difference. Make sure you understand the costs involved.
  • References – It always a good idea to get a reference or go on a recommendation of a friend, especially if you like the images you have seen.

Professional photographers are just that, they are professional. No different from any other profession. You can buy a pair of scissors but would you cut your hair yourself or would you go to a professional hairdresser?

Newborn Photography Q & A

They’re not so little for very long….

When should I have newborn photos done?

Newborns grow and change at such a rapid pace. I would say that it is never to early to have newborn photographs done and an ideal time would be around six days. Most of the time your baby is completely oblivious to what’s going on around them that they quite often sleep through the entire session.

Why do newborn shoots take place in the first 2 weeks?

Newborn shoots take place in the first two weeks because during this time the sleepy curled up poses can be achieved, after this time babies tend to sleep less and are less flexible so it will be less likely that we achieve those poses.

My baby is older than 2 weeks can I still have photos taken?

Yes of course, if your baby was born on or after his due date it’s unlikely that we’ll get the sleeping poses, but that’s not a problem I just want to manage your expectations.  If your baby was slightly premature this does give us a larger time frame.

When should I book my shoot?

I would book your shoot before your baby is born this way you can reserve your slot in my diary. A good rule of thumb would be to book your shoot five days after your due date. I limit the number of newborn slots each week to accommodate date changes, Babies are rarely born on time so I aim to be completely flexible with dates. Session fees are payable at the time of booking to secure your slot.

What is included in the session fee?

The session fee covers my time and talent on the day of your shoot. It covers editing of images, newborns often require more editing than other age groups, and the cost of your online web gallery for two weeks.

What should a baby wear for a newborn shoot?

In my opinion the best thing for your baby to wear is nothing, if you are in my studio it will be kept warm so they won’t get cold, it may be a bit warm for parents though! So please wear layers! It is also worth mentioning that having taken off their nappies I am quite prepared to have some cleaning up to do. I have lots of baby blankets and spare props so everything just goes in the wash after the shoot. It’s not a problem and I’m used to it so please don’t feel embarrassed!

How long will the shoot take?

More often than not newborn shoots take between two and four hours.

It’s best not to rush, they need time to settle to get those great shots. Happy babies have full tummies, so this allows plenty of time for feeding and cuddles – a relaxed atmosphere without parents feeling pressured. I quite often play white noise, which also helps them to settle.

Do you just photograph newborns?

No I don’t just photograph newborn’s. I am a specialist children’s photographer so I am happy to photograph children of all ages.

Can I have photographs of my newborn with their sibling’s?

Yes of course you can, but I would suggest that we don’t do these at your newborn shoot, my advice would be that these are done on a separate occasion.

Can I purchase a “package” for photography to cover my babies first year?

Yes you certainly can please contact me for more details and prices.

If there are any other questions that you would like to ask, please don’t hesitate to contact me, or if you just fancy a chat please ring.
